”Today Is The Day To Turn Resentment Into Forgiveness”

”Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

Martin Luther King, Jr.

I bet you did not know that today is Forgiveness Day! It is always a touchy subject, but one I think that we need to keep discussing. Forgiveness is hard! I get that, really I do! I mean, I am right there with you. Somewhere between anger, guilt, blame, and responsibility. I just firmly believe that forgiveness is an important step in our healing journey. A step that has nothing to do with my abusers, and everything to do with my inner-peace. In fact, I don’t think it is a step at all. Forgiveness is a journey in and of itself.

Today is Forgiveness Day. This is a great opportunity to let go of some of the weight that might be holding you down. A few years back I wrote a piece about my 3 keys to happiness and  I have found forgiveness is one of the huge factors to a happy life. Since today is Forgiveness Day I thought I would share my 3 keys once again. I am telling you I firmly believe this is true. Celebrate the day properly and forgive someone today.

”There is no love without forgiveness, and there is no forgiveness without love. ”

Bryant H. McGill

Passion– You need to have something that you are passionate about. You need something that you love so much that you can’t wait to get up and experience. It could be your job, a hobby, a loved one…anything. We all need that one thing that keeps us going and gives us a reason to go on. If your job is your passion you will never work a day in your life.

Forgiveness– If you do not learn to forgive and let go of things you will always have an anchor holding you back from reaching your full speed. We must remember that forgiveness is a gift to you, not the other person. You are the one who is set free. It doesn’t mean that you forget but it does mean that you won’t be held prisoner by it. You are in control. When you can forgive you carry a much lighter backpack of burdens.

Acceptance– When you realize we are all individuals with different likes and dislikes and ways of living you will be free to be happy. Don’t concern yourself with how you wish things were and learn to accept them for what they are, you are on your way to happiness.

I have used these keys to help me. I still struggle day to day but always find a way to let happy in and win. Use your keys to open your mind and soul.

  1. I sometimes wonder if I have anything to forgive. Maybe it’s because no huge transgression were committed against me, or maybe it’s because I don’t pay much attention to the actions of people who do not matter to me. However, every now and then, I do get upset about people relatively close to me doing something hurtful and it lingers in my head for a while. But again, if they want to remain close to me and are apologetic, we both learn and move on. Otherwise, the person gets discarded. And their transgressions go with them.
