”The beginning of wisdom is the beginning of supernatural power.”
Before beginning our discussion on the supernatural power, let us first try to define what is supernatural. The prefix super attached to the term natural suggests that the aspect or object referred to by the term is something that occurs beyond the purview of what we call as natural. Thus, the supernatural is something that does not allow itself to be defined or limited by the characteristics of those that are natural. Thus when we say supernatural, we are probably referring to something that is far superior, far powerful and far unreachable than the natural.
Nature is the source head of all that is natural. When we say natural, we mean all that is created by nature namely space and the five elements, the universe, the earth and all that we see unmoving and moving on this earth. The full list of what we have mentioned so far can be perceived by the five senses. They all subject themselves to the laws of nature. We find them working in accordance with the principles of science. Therefore, nature is finite meaning has a beginning and end, is perishable and is subject to changes.
What are governed by the laws of science are called finite?
Thus, what we mean by the term supernatural should be infinite meaning it cannot be perceived by the five senses and it cannot be approached by the understanding facilitated by science. In other words, we can never define it to be something or the other and also we cannot expect it to be limited by some conspicuous aspects. We need to, therefore, search some other paradigms to approach the supernatural principle.
Then follows whether there is one or many supernatural phenomena. When supernatural is far superior to the natural and has to be something that has no beginning and no end, there cannot be more than one supernatural since the very existence of the second supernatural will negate the presence of the other supernatural. Thus, the supernatural that we are talking about must be the origin of all that is natural; it should have no beginning and end, it should not undergo any changes and provided all these descriptions apply to the supernatural, then naturally we cannot perceive it through our five senses. The implication is that it can never be explained though it certainly exists.
The supernatural that we are talking about should be endowed with all the powers that we can imagine since it is the source of all the energy of nature. It should be the infinite storehouse of all that is needed for the creation and therefore should be the super matter if we can call it so. Thus, the super energy, super matter, and the superior aspect should be the one that is called by different names as God or Atman. A Vedic dictum says, “Words and mind cannot indeed approach the Atman; all that attempts to define it becomes inadequate and inappropriate to succeed in the mission. Therefore, though we cannot provide any visible proofs for the existence of the supernatural, supernatural certainly exists.
